Topic 2: Opportunities in the silver economy

The European Commission projects that by 2025, the silver economy will considerably contribute to employment creation and the gross value added (GVA) of the European Union (EU), in addition to producing billions in profits. The primary opportunities provided by the silver economy are analysed below:

  • Silverisation of industries: The market will see the introduction of new goods and services tailored to the requirements of senior citizens. It will be crucial to rely on gerontechnology, the branch of technology that examines human ageing, to do this.
  • An encouragement for new careers. The population’s ageing will bring about job growth and the establishment of vocations in the silver economy, such as in the aged care industry.
  • Financing in strategic plans. Governments will be prompted to invest in programmes that enhance aged independence and health care as a result of the growth of the senior economy.
