Topic 2: Basic characteristics of an age-friendly establishment

The following are basic characteristics and behaviours in an age-friendly establishment:

  • Help prevent falls by removing physical barriers. Create a safe environment that encourages older customers to continue visiting your establishment.
  • Consider lighting, safety and access to the information available in the shop, such as glasses for eyestrain or a magnifying glass so that people with impaired vision can read product specifications, information, menus, etc.
  • Avoiding noise and loud music or speaking clearly are important aspects to make your business a friendlier place.
  • With respect to cognitive impairment, it is important to: respond calmly and reassuringly; if they are a regular customer, comment on what they usually do in your establishment; be patient and transmit tranquillity to the rest of the customers.
